Dreaming of 1,001 Nights: Alger Fashion Week Paris 3
afw3-1

Algeria’s geographical location in North Africa has historically placed it at the crossroads of diverse civilizations and empires, which have been influenced by its culture and fashion — and which in turn have left their own imprints.  Many Algerian garments such as the burnous cloak (typically made from fine wool) are hooded to protect the wearer from the elements such as harsh desert winds and mountains snows.  French soldiers famously brought this trend to Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries when they began adding burnous cloaks atop of their Western uniforms.  Algerian fashion is providing inspiration once again to international brands as seen in designer Ellie Saab’s 2017 F/W runway show.

The designers at AFW Paris presented both women’s and menswear.  The collections balanced flamboyance with elegance and comfort.  A rainbow of bold colors and embellishments dominated the runway throughout the night.  The women on the runway dazzled in bright red, sunny yellow, verdant green, and regal blue and purple garments embroidered with gold and silver threads and accessorized to the max.

In contrast, the muted earth tones, navies, and creams in the menswear created a balanced presentation.
