Its beginning to feel like winter in Rome. The temperatures are finally dipping, but Christmas decorations are not up yet to add cheer to the atmosphere. My friend Jenny suggested that we head out to the Tin House. It was the perfect evening for some spicy pan-Asian food at Tin House Japanese Chinese Restaurant.
Tin House is located in the Monti neighborhood and just steps from the Cavour metro B stop. The restaurant has both outdoor and indoor dining options. The interior boasts two large dining rooms. The decor still includes reminders of the location’s past life as a pizzeria (including old artwork of iconic Roman attractions).
You can choose from two different menus. One with spicy Szechuan specialties and the second offers a wide range of sushi and pan-Asian dishes. We opted for the all you can eat option available for the second menu (14.90 Euros at lunch and 19.90 Euros at dinner).
This option is served family style, but there is no limit to the number of dishes that can be ordered for the table to share. It works best if the entire table wants to try lots of different dishes. The all you can eat option is a great for large groups, but I’m already planning a return trip to check out the Szechuan menu 🙂 !
For starters we tried a mix of sushi, tempura, dumplings, and soup. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and spice level of the dishes at Tin House. The sushi was fresh and presented well.
Asian restaurants in Monti can be hit or miss. Indian restaurants here can be especially dismal when compared to London or Paris. Maybe spicy food isn’t popular among Romans or perhaps its because the neighborhood caters to a lot of tourists with some exceptional Italian restaurants. Most people come to Rome for pizza and pasta after all.
Among the entrees we tried, the beef with potato and the prawns (just tails on) with bamboo stood out to me. I was too stuffed by the time the chicken curry came out, but that looked equally good!
